This paper seeks to examine the issues associated with proposals to discontinue dams. The paper will examine the significant number of issues that need to be considered and show that the process of discontinuance can be long, often protracted and expensive. The paper, via case studies of a number of dams which have been discontinued, will demonstrate the issues that have been considered at the sites which are very different. It will illustrate that the sites can be left in different states depending on the location and that the process can often be found to be very acceptable to those who judge.
