Effect of Stress and Fatigue on the Redox Status of Plasma CoQ

To test the possibility that the redox status of CoQ might serve as a marker for fatigue, we analyzed plasma CoQ status in human and rodents that had been loaded with physical and/or mental stress. Twenty-four healthy volunteers were loaded with the two types of stresses using an ergometer and computer-assisted advanced trail making-test. HPLC analysis revealed that the plasma levels of reduced form of CoQ decreased markedly after giving stress with concomitant increase in its oxidized form. When rodents were challenged with either panic stress or irradiation of ultraviolet-B to the eye, similar changes in the redox status of plasma CoQ were observed. These results suggest that the redox status of plasma CoQ might be a useful marker for the evaluation of fatigue.
