The increases in Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and color during the last two decades in dystrophic watersheds in southeast Norway, southern Sweden and south westernmost Finland, northern UK/Ireland, in the foothills of Central Europe and in North-eastern US are mainly governed by fluctuations in field wetness and rainfall intensity due to shifts in predominant hydrological pathways through the soil. However, this can not solely account for the unprecedented increase in dissolved natural organic matter (DOM) and color. The underlying governing factors are likely related to environmental aspects which are undergoing changes on a regional scale: e.g. climate, land-use and anthropogenic atmospheric deposition.
