The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is an organization which develops and approves a minimum performance standard for gasoline-fueled passenger car engine oil It was organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler LLC. In 1992, ILSAC issued the GF-1 standard and in 1993, GF-1 was introduced into the market. ILSAC GF-1 specified a fuel economy engine test in addition to the API SH standard. Then ILSAC issued GF-2 standard in 1993 and GF-3 standard in 2001. The latest standard is ILSAC GF-4, which was issued in 2004. From 2005, ILSAC started to develop the next GF-5 standard. The objective of ILSAC GF-5 is to improve fuel economy, engine oil robustness and emission system compatibility relative to ILSAC GF-4. This presentation reviews ILSAC GF-5 requirements.
