Plasmodium must accomplish complex spatial and developmental transitions within the mosquito vector, in order to be transmitted between hosts. The complex interaction between a variety of malaria parasite and mosquito factors determines the outcome of malaria infection in the mosquito. Development of control strategies which block Plasmodium development in the mosquito require detailed understanding of these factors, including the mosquito's immune response and its variation across the different Plasmodium-mosquito combinations occurring in the field.
