The present invention relates to the prevention of malaria transmission. It focuses on the use of thioester-containing proteins that function in the immune system of the mosquito Anopheles gambiae which is the major vector of human malaria. The invention furthermore relates to a method of making mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles refractory towards the malaria parasite plasmodium, and to refractory mosquitoes produced according to this method.
