Advances in atmospheric monitoring techniques in underground coal mines have enabled mine operators to analyze the underground atmospheric conditions in real-time. Data obtained from real time monitoring of atmospheric conditions allow predictive algorithms to be established. These algorithms may provide mine operators with advanced warning of possible dangerous conditions in the future by signaling the development of a high risk atmosphere. Typically, atmospheric monitoring systems will give warnings at preset threshold levels, but the combination of parameters that lead to the threshold level can be numerous. This work aims to better understand these combinations. Real-time atmospheric monitoring sensors have been placed in an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia allowing preliminary data to be analyzed, and the development of predictive algorithms to begin. This paper reviews current techniques used to develop predictive algorithms of atmospheric monitoring data, preliminary predictive algorithms from real-time monitoring results, and recommendations for future work.
