Lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of various 1-arylethanols was performed in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO{sub}2), in hexane and without using a solvent. The use of scCO{sub}2 enhances reactivity especially when a cross-linked enzyme aggregate (CLEA) was used. Moreover, a novel continuous-flow scCO{sub}2 process for kinetic resolution of racemic alcohols was performed with an immobilized lipase to lead to a quantitative mixture of the corresponding optically active acetates with up to 99% ee and unreacted alcohols with up to 99% ee. The productivity of the optically active compounds was improved by over 400 times compared to the corresponding batch reaction using scCO{sub}2.
