As a long-term alternative for R502, environmentally friendly refrigerant mixtures were proposed and performance evaluations of refrigeration system with alternatives were conducted. Two newly proposed refrigerants are near-azeotropic binary mixtures, R152a/R1270 (35/65 by wt.%) and R290/DME (35/65 by wt.%). These two alternatives have zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) and much less GWP (Global Warming Potential) than R502 and R404A. They have excellent thermodynamic and transport properties. In this study, thermodynamic refrigeration cycle analysis was performed, and cycle characteristics such as cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, suction and discharge pressures and temperatures are compared to those for the baseline R502 and the R404A systems. In addition, performance evaluation tests were conducted with evaporation temperature of 5°C, condensation temperature of 45°C, subcooling temperature of 5°C, superheating temperature of 5°C. Comparisons between R404A and R290/DME (35/65 by wt.%) were carried out on the same cooling capacity. The system performance of newly proposed refrigerant mixture showed promising results.
