CAD systems have been widely used in the design stage of engineering. Many second development methods or systems are put forward based on general CAD applications. However, most of these methods or systems are limited to graph itself, not the drawings in the whole. This paper presents a different approach, one that combines all portions of drawings (i.e., drawing terminal) including graphs, dimension marks, text marks, and schedules of quantities, text notes, and drawing frames. Engineering graph components, dimension mark components and text mark components are encapsulated as an Engineering Graph Pattern (EGP) based on parameter-driven. Schedules of quantities are encapsulated as a Engineering Schedule Pattern (ESP) based on characteristic, and text notes are encapsulated as Engineering Notes Pattern(ENP) oriented to objects, and then, EGPs, an ESP, an ENP and a drawing frame compose a drawing unit together. Drawing units are grouped based on engineering feature and managed with the help of catalog tree. In this way, mounts of drawings are designed, modified, and managed clearly and efficiently. Consequently, a system for expressway tunnel drawing design and management (SETDDM) based on this approach is described, which is developed with Visual C++ on the platform of GeoFBA. At last, the advantages of this approach are briefly specified.
