We studied the yield strength of lotus-type porous iron prepared with a continuous zone melting method in a pressurized nitrogen or Jrydrogen atmosphere. The compression tests revealed that the 0.2 percent offset strength (compressive yield strength) in the direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of pores decreases linearly with increasing porosity, while the strength in the perpendicular direction decreases steeply. The dependence of the strength on porosity can be expressed using a well-known power law formula. In addition, the 0.2 percent offset strength of lotus iron prepared in a nitrogen atmosphere is found to be larger than that of lotus iron prepared in a hydrogen atmosphere, which is attributed to the solid solution hardening by the solute nitrogen.
