Reticulated nickel foams were alloyed with aluminum and/or chromium by a pack-aluminizing and-chromizing method to produce Ni-Cr, Ni-Al, and Ni-Cr-Al foams, whereby Al and Cr are deposited from the gas phase onto a pure Ni foam, which is then subjected to a homogenizing treatment to remove concentration gradients. The resulting foams retain the low relative densities (>3 percent) and open-cell structure with hollow struts of the original Ni foams. Heat-treatments to produce a superalloy gamma/gamma min structure are described, and the compressive behavior and oxidation properties of the foams are presented.
