Under the pressures of the decreases of high quality iron ore, the iron and steel enterprises in China turn to use low-quality ores which contain elements such as much silicon, aluminum, et al, in sintering. In order to understand the metallogenic and reduction mechanism of the low-quality iron ore sinter, the sinter samples were analyzed by mineralogical microscopy to explore the effect of silicon and aluminum on the formation of complex calcium ferrite during sintering. In addition, the characteristics of the gas-soild reduction reaction between complex calcium ferrites and CO gas were studied by thermogravimetric analyzer. The effect of silicon on the changes of mineral composition and microstructure of complex calcium ferrite during the isothermal reduction process was also investigated. The results of this study will help to the efficient utilization of low quality iron ore in sintering process.
