While an extensive water quality monitoring programme is in place in Finland it is not practical to perform the monitoring required by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) through conventional methods alone. In this paper we show how MERIS full resolution data can be used to monitor chl a concentrations, one of the main parameters of the WFD, of Lake S?kyl?n Pyh?j?rvi. The MERIS estimates are compared with in situ data measured at a raft with continuously operating measurement equipment and water samples analysed in a laboratory. The results show the types of products that could be generated to cover the needs of the directive reporting and the areas where improvements are still necessary.
