摘要

Three years of measurements from the SCIAMACHY instrument on ENVISAT were analysed for tropospheric SO{sub}2 absorption. Both volcanic and anthropogenic emissions were identified in the data with much better spatial resolution than possible when using GOME data. Radiative transfer modelling studies show a pronounced dependence of the sensitivity on surface albedo and vertical distribution of SO{sub}2, but also on wavelength and the amount of SO{sub}2 present in the troposphere. This effect has been exploited to make an estimate on the plume height for the Sierra Negra eruption in October 2005, which produced the largest SO{sub}2 columns (in excess of 100 DU) observed so far by GOME and SCIAMACHY.
