Potential emission of multiple pollutants including SOx, NOx, HCl, PCDD/Fs and heavy metals from stationary sources has become a public concern. Pollutants like PCDD/Fs may originate from different sources, including waste incineration, bushfire, diesel engines and even smoking. To meet the emission standards which become more and more stringent, most pollutant emitters are commonly equipped with various air pollutant control devices (APCDs). They use different equipment and procedures, leading to different levels of emission control. Therefore, multi-pollutants treatment technologies with the advantages of bringing down the capital and operation cost as well as reducing the space required for facility installation can fit the demand of Taiwan well. In this study, an innovative air pollution control technology, which combines plasma and catalysis is developed. This technology is investigated for its effectiveness in simultaneous removal of PCDD/Fs. The PCDD/F removal efficiency achieved with pilot-scale combined plasma catalysis system is more than 90%. This innovative air pollution control technology is of high potential to solve the emerging air quality problems in 21 century.
