The Ettrick Field Development Blocks 20/2a 20/3a, UKCS, Central North Sea

Ettrick is located in the UK Central North Sea in blocks 20/2a (P.317) and 20/3a (P.273) some 120kms North-East of Aberdeen (Figure 1) and within 22kms of the Nexen operated Buzzard oilfield. The field has had a long and varied history having multiple owners since its discovery by BNOC in 1981. The 20/2-1 discovery well penetrated oil-bearing sandstones in the Upper Jurassic, Middle Volgian Ettrick Sands at 10,300ft TVDSS. The field was later appraised and tested by a further seven wells between 1982 and 1985, four of which produced hydrocarbons to surface. The 20/2-4 well was drilled down dip of the main accumulation on the South-West Ettrick fault block and encountered thick, massive turbidite sandstones but the unit was water wet. The field remained undeveloped until Nexen entered the UK North Sea with a US2.1 billion acquisition of EnCana’s assets in 2004. Work began on an FDP and Ettrick was sanctioned by the DTi in February 2006. The Ettrick field area has been unitised to align the partnership, with Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd now owning an 79.73% equity. Other partners are Bow Valley Petroleum (UK) Ltd with a 12% and Atlantic Petroleum UK Ltd with 8.27%.
