Electronic ticketing was already widely discussed the last years. Aside fraud protection more flexible, fair and efficient tarife systems can be deployed while the use of public transport for the passenger is simplified. All different system approaches discussed in the past such as CiCo (Check In Check Out) or BiBo (Be In Be out) are fighting either technic al problems or can not be adpoted for so called "open systems" where the passenger has not to pass any barrier when entering the public transport. A new system approach is proposed taking the best of CiCo and BiBo and is called CiBo (Check In Be Out). This approach utilizes a user media incorporating a ISO14443 compliant contactless interface. A second radio interface using the ISM band is allowing wireless communication in the range of some meters for automatic passenger detection in the vehicles during the trip. The CiBo approach offers a lot of technical, economical and legal advantages. Technically the CiBo solution simplifies the implementation allowing for cheap user medias with a long lifetime. Legally the check in process is a clear user statement, avoiding problems such as non working wake up mechanisms or mistaken check in. In addition the approach allows a smooth introduction as e.g. existing Mifare infrastructure can be used. During setup and normal operation the system can even be mixed with Ci only or CiCo applications.
