The issue of climate change and the increase in fuel cost over the past decade has highlighted the need to introduce alternative fuels on a larger scale and to further improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles. In parallel, the anxiety about the effects of exhaust and noise emissions from heavy vehicles in urban areas has increased. To come to terms with these environmental issues and combat congestion, public transport needs to be made more convenient to attract more passengers. With the presentation of the Scania hybrid concept, Scania demonstrates its commitment to participate in the transition into a sustainable urban transport system with greater passenger appeal. A normal Scania engine is coupled to an efficient high-output series hybrid powertrain integrated in a novel and attractive bus design. To live up to Scania's demands regarding uptime and quality, the components used have a design life comparable to that of the vehicle, i.e. a full 10-15 years. Highly efficient reuse of braking energy is realised by combining powertrain components with high output and high efficiency from low speed with an energy storage module also designed for high output and high cycle efficiency. This yields fuel savings of at least 25%. The concept lends itself to the use of various fuels that are available to Scania customers.
