Doubling Public Transport Ridership in 15 years - a challenge

The Goteborg region (1,5 million inh.), has an agenda to meet future demands on sustainability. Key words in this agenda is "considerably improved public transport". The K2020 project is established as a task force. K2020 describes how to double public transport ridership until 2020. K2020 is a five-year project, today involving more than 50 people in Goteborg working with different tasks to prepare the final and politically approved "Public Transport Plan" for the whole region. Doubling the ridership has been decided by the Executive City Board in Goteborg and by corresponding boards in other organisations responsible for transport, city development, public transport etc. A political "Yes" implies a "Yes" also to future funds to realise the project. Prevailing wind is "cooperation and unity". The plan comprises new tramlines, new bus rapid transit lines, new public transport bridges across the river and new terminals. The plan requires a strong cooperation between land use and public transport planning. The master plan for Goteborg is strongly influenced by K2020. Interchange points with strong development potential have been identified. These are the future nodes in the public transport structure in the region. In addition, the K2020 project comprises soft measures, for example: the future traveller/passenger, marketing, safety and security, car pooling and ticketing. Great emphasis is also put on The Strong Organisation, unconventional financing schemes and a radiant showcase.
