Traditionally,sulfur recovery units have used in-ground sulfur pits for the collection and in certain cases degassing of sulfur produced in the unit.Operating and maintenance history of sulfur pits has shown that deterioration of the concrete floor and walls is very common.In addition,the conditions in a sulfur pit have proven time and time again to be very corrosive to internals such as steam coils,exchangers,piping and drain valves inside the pit,with costly maintenance requiring full shut down of the SRU.Due to the presence and release of H2S from the sulfur produced in the SRU,additional risks such as sulfur fires or even explosions causing damage to the pit provide additional hazards to the plant operator.This article will review several different options available to the industry for handling the collection of sulfur from a sulfur recovery unit and how that may tie in with producing a degassed sulfur product with less than 10 ppmw H2SX.
