Complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is clearly the standard surgical procedure for patients with symptomatic gallstones. Since its introduction in 1987 LC has increasingly replaced open cholecystectomy (OC) because of less pain, quicker recovery, and reduced hospital stay. A large population study, published in 1999, snowed that morbidity and mortality after LC were significantly lower than after OC. In an extensive meta-analysis via a MEDLINE search outcomes of 78 747 LC patients were examined and compared with outcomes of OC. LC appears to have a lower mortality rate but a higher common bile duct injury. Against that, early postoperative complications including wound infection, small bowel obstruction or bleeding, do not differ from OC.
