Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis represent the main entities of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Both diseases tend to take a chronic course with frequent relapses. More than half of the patients with IBD are candidates for immunosuppressive therapy either due to severe unresponsive flares of disease or due to chronic activity with the long-term need for corticosteroids to control symptoms.
