Novel perspectives on the possible role of enterocytes in intestinal and systemic autoimmunity

摘要

The alimentary tract lining consists of specialized endothelial cells joined together by tight junctions. In the small intestine these cells assume a characteristic morphology and are referred to as enterocytes. The principal function of enterocytes is as a barrier between the intestinal contents and the body. In addition, they serve various roles in gastrointestinal physiology, including digestion and transport of water, electrolytes, and nutrients.
