Side-effects associated with use of oral budesonide in children and adolescents

Successful treatment of inflammatory bowel disease requires medications that will achieve and maintain remission of the disease. However, those medications with the greatest potential to achieve remission also carry the highest risks of side-effects. Oral corticosteroids are highly effective for the treatment of active Crohn's disease. They induce clinical remission fairly rapidly, and lead to weight gain and improved appetitie. However, first-generation systemic corticosteroids induce a variety of side-effects. The most common are cosmetic side-effects such as moon face, acne, hirsuitism, striae and central adiposity. Numerous significant side-effects with greater morbidity have been associated with this therapy.
