The development of adhesions in the peritoneal and pelvic cavities, which commonly form after surgery or infection, causes significant morbidity and mortality. Barrier agents should be attached directly to the operated site as adhesion has been postulated by using barrier agents to prevent two surfaces being in contact. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effect of two barrier materials, a new material, HOGY sheet and Seprafilm in the prevention of postsurgical adhesion formation in pigs. HOGY sheet is made of a non-woven fabric to handle easily even in wet. Total 18 pigs underwent partial liver resection, and they were treated with HOGY sheet, Seprafilm or without a tissue protective material. On the 14th day after surgery, adhesion formations were quantified and qualified by adhesion scores. As a result, pigs with HOGY sheet showed lower adhesion scores than that with Seprafilm. This data suggests that clinical application of HOGY sheet could have significant preventive impact on adhesion formation especially after liver surgery.
