Liver regeneration after open and laparoscopic left partial hepatectomy

Aim: The project compares the impact of the Open Left Partial Hepatectomy (OLPH) and the Laparoscopic Left Partial Hepatectomy (LLPH), on the regenerative response of the liver.Materials and Methods: Two series of twenty eight liver tissue sections from fourteen porcine liver tissues, were randomly allocated into two groups: the OLPH group (n=8) and the LLPH group(n=6).The liver tissue sections in each group, had been prepared and stained with PCNA stain and with Cleaved-CASPASE-3 stain.A well defined proliferative (LCPI) and an apoptotic (LCAI) index, was estimated. LCAI and LCPI were compared at a time a) between, after operation (PD0) and on the 7th postoperative day (PD7) in each group and between the groups, and b)on the PD7 ,between the two groups.Results: By using rank-order statistical methods for small samples, statistical comparisons of the LCAIs between PD0 and PD7, in each group, showed no statistically significant difference(α=0.05).Statistical comparison of the LCAIs between the two groups on the PD7, resulted in no statistically significant differences. Statistical comparisons of the LCPIs, between PD0 and PD7 in each group, showed no statistically significant difference(α=5%), while on the 7th postoperative day, showed a statistically significant difference, between the two groups, favouring the OLPH group(α=5%).Conclusions: OLPH may prepare the liver to regenerate more intensively than LLPH.
