Three routes of synthesizing nitroimidazole heterocyclic compound l-methyl-2, 4, 5-trinitro-imidazole (MTNI) were studied in detail. The results showed that there was only one synthetic route could synthesize MTNI. The other two could not. Its molecular structure was characterized by ~1H-NMR, ~(13)C-NMR and elemental analysis. Nitration 1-Methyl-2, 4-dinitroimidazole (MDNI) to MTNI was difficult, and nitration 1-methyl-2,4,5-triiodicimidazole to MTNI was difficult too. The detonation velocity D and detonation pressure P_(cj) and mechanic sensitivity such as h50 of MTNI were calculated and predicted by quantum chemistry method. The results showed that MTNI is one novel low melting-point low sensitivity high explosive, and is one important potential substitute of TNT. But the synthesis of MTNI is difficult.
