The search for new and thermally stable energetic plasticisers led us to investigate the reactivity of 3(5),4-dinitropyrazole (DNP). DNP is easily derivatised due to its highly acidic proton and numerous alkylations and conjugate additions were performed. Certain alkylations resulted in product mixtures, whereas others provided one single product. The latter was also true for the conjugate additions. The pure products obtained were studied with regards to their identity, purity and melting- and decomposition temperatures. The only product with sufficiently low melting point to be considered as a plasticiser was 1-allyl-3(5),4-dinitropyrazole. One other product could be used as a new melt-cast explosive.
