Production and Characterization of Novel Energetic Compositions by Spray Drying

Nanocomposite energetics, particularly those which are mainly comprised of nanocrystalline high explosives (HEs) in a binder, have been shown to exhibit substantially lower sensitivity to stimuli such as shock and impact as compared to the coarser HE-based compositions. To date, most of the research has been focused on RDX. In this work we discuss results of our investigation on CL-20. Spray drying was employed in the preparation of CL-20-based composites with polyvinyl acetate binder. Structural characterization revealed that both nanocrystalline and amorphous forms were obtained, depending on the processing conditions.
