LEAD FREE PYROTECHNIC INITIATING COMPOSITIONS BASED ON ENERGETIC OXIDIZERS.

Because of environmental regulations, uncertainties concerning future use of Lead in general have incited a work that has aimed at replacing Lead used in pyrotechnic compositions or as part of certain primary explosives used in the military industry. Focus has been to use a rather new kind of energetic oxidizers in the form of metalamino dinitramide complexes. These complexes, Cu(NH_3)_4(N_3O_4)_2, Zn(NH_3)_6(N_3O_4)_2 and Pd(NH_3)_4(N_3O_4)_2 have been mixed with reducing agents and tested in several ways. This paper will presert the work that has been performed and the results from the tests. The results show that pyrotechnic compositions have been formulated that are fully comparable with the primary explosive Lead dinitro resorcinate in the energy and effect needed to ignite in electrical igniters.
