The Japanese main bank system has, according to its main critics, provided Japanese corporations with low cost financing by which they gained a comparative cost advantage over their Western counterparts. The Japanese financial liberalization, as shown in this paper, will change the behavior of the Japanese banking sector and its relationships with the non financial corporate sector. This paper also gives support to the financial literature which holds that corporate size matters in corporate financing.
