The exploitation of Ajopa mineral deposit belonging to AngloGold Ashanti (Iduapriem) at Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana is not seriously considered as a result of perceived unattractiveness of the project due to little study that has been carried out on the project. Pit optimisation was run using the Datamine NPV Scheduler programme. The optimisation parameters that include mining and processing costs used for pit optimization were based on the study carried out over 10 years period of the existence of the mine. Sensitivity analyses were conducted and based on the prevailing gold price the best scenario was selected and subjected to pit design. The designed pit guaranteed additional mine life of 2.4 years based on yearly production mill throughput of 1.2 million tonnes with attractive operating cash cost of 171 dollars/oz. Based on the salient mining key statistics obtained from this study the Ajopa deposit looks very viable under the prevailing economic conditions and the deposit requires immediate exploitation in line with the company's traditional vision to aggressively pursue and grow the mineral industry in Ghana.
