THE EFFECTS of soil solarisation, bagasse amendment and benomyl application on Fusarium spp. and possible weed control in sugarcane fields were evaluated. Bagasse (40 t/ha) and benomyl (10 kg/ha) were incorporated alone or with transparent polyethylene sheet (70 urn) tarping. The treatments were applied for a month and then soil samples obtained from 5, 10, 20 and 30 cm depths. Propagule numbers of Fusarium spp. were estimated through dilution plating on selective Nash/Snyder medium. Propagules of Fusarium spp. in all treated soils were significantly decreased at all depths as compared with the untreated control in one experiment. Population reductions were less in a second experiment. Pokkah boeng incidence was reduced by the solarised, bagasse + solarised and benomyl + solarised treatments. Furthermore, weed populations in the bagasse, bagasse + solarised and solarised treatments were also significantly reduced in comparison with the control.
