First applications of LC-OCD-OND (Liquid Chromatography -Organic Carbon Detection -Organic Nitrogen Detection) are presented. With this new technique urea and other trace contaminants can be determined with high selectivity and sensitivity. It is shown that urea may be an important contaminant in many UPWs using surface water as primary source. At other sites, Natural Organic Matter (NOM) from raw water may be the only contaminant. NOM may exhibit secondary adverse effects like fouling of polishing loop MB resins. At the same time polishing loop MB resins may leach, initially or permanently, a compound we coined "L2". This compound can effectively be removed with RO.
