Shaker table testing is often done to establish/validate the fatigue life capabilities of engine attachments. The question was raised, using single axis shaker table fatigue testing, what excitation best replicates 4-cycle engine motions: swept sine or random. Both approaches derive their excitation profiles from the same engine motions. In this case, best equates with the method that nets the highest accumulated fatigue damage per testing time. This paper will show that the best method is dependent upon the resonant frequency and damping of the item being tested and the engine's configuration.
