Challenges of Floating Production Systems in West Africa

The increase in field development activity in West Africa is an opportunity to expand business internationally. The discovery of significant hydrocarbon reserves in deep waters gives a welcome boost to the oil industry at a time of oil price uncertainty. With every opportunity however comes uncertainty, the degree of which will impact the industries perception of risk, and the cost of conducting such business. There are significant challenges for Operators and contractors alike in establishing operations in West Africa but with improvements in local government policies, such challenges can be met. For the floating production contractor, evidence of changing fiscal regimes and commitment by more operators to the region are signs of increasing confidence. Undoubtedly the experience gained from other deepwater environments can be taken to Africa to unlock the potential of a fast developing region.
