West African Pastoral Production Systems. Working Paper Number 3 of Livestock Production and Marketing in the Entente States of West Africa

An adequate typology of West African pastoralism is lacking. This paper presents and utilizes such a typology to describe the main pastoral production systems of dry West Africa. Unlike previous classifications based on the degree or pattern of movement among pastoralists, the author's typology is based on four variables-environment, sociocultural tradition, source of livelihood, and the degree to which production is marketed. The author proceeds to detail the contributions to production of land, technology, herd characteristics, and labor.
