Goal of this work is the development of an innovative process to separate very fine grained and therefore hard to filter suspensions into the solid and the liquid phase as complete as possible by mechanical means. Basis for this should be the continuous filtration of a highly consolidated and very thin particle layer on the filter medium For the technical application of such a novel filtration process a broad spectrum of relevant products is existing in different branches. At present for difficult to separate suspensions different techniques are applied, but all of them show specific deficiencies with regard to throughput and/or moisture content of the separated solids caused by physical and/or contructive reasons. For the novel process the filtration of very fine grained suspensions leading to highly compressible filter cakes has been analyzed systematically and the results has been combined with the possibilities of the modern filtration technology. There are appearing several strategies for a successful realization of the novel process and critical aspects like preventing the blockage of the filter medium by fine particles, avoiding of shrinkage cracks during the desaturation of the filter cake and guaranteeing a reliable discharge of the very thin cake layer are to be investigated but seem to be controllable.
