Construction operations involve many complex tasks and dependence among resources. When a project is taking place it is difficult to document what occurs on site through out the whole project. Site management often prepares daily reports to track progress and other resource related issues. Daily reports address the static nature of construction operations related to the quantity of resource usage, such as labor, equipment, and materials. These reports, however, lack the detailed information on actual resource utilization over time. As a result, construction engineers often need to analyze complex tasks without a lot of detailed operational information. Several technology advances have made new approaches to data collection and analysis possible. Some novel technologies are able to provide engineers with more efficient and accurate data, such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Onboard Instrumentation (OBI). RFID technology can provide real-time objects tracking in a certain range, GPS technology can position object spatial locations based on a coordinate system in a short time and OBI devices can provide the monitoring of mechanical parameters so that an instant diagnosis can be implemented in case of any malfunction. This research presents an on-going research that utilizes real-time position data to track construction resources and to analyze the efficiency of the operation.
