Distributed locating of shared resources in distributed systems and its application to the load balancing problems

In this paper, we propose a distributed algorithm for solving a resource locating problem, that generally arises in solving the dynamic load balancing problem in distributed systems. The proposed algorithm is fully distributed in the sense that it assumes no centralized control by a collection of servers. By the results of simulations, we found that (1) the performance of a load balancing algorithm is significantly affected by the number of inquiries issued per locating, and that (2) in the proposed algorithm, the average number of inquiries per locating is bounded by a very small value (e.g., two or three inquiries are enough even when the underlying system consists of 100 host computers) for the whole range of the system load.
