The electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC) has held the fascination of researchers for decades. Many have regarded the EDLC as a nearly ideal energy storage device, based on the separation of charge between a polarized pair of carbon electrodes with extremely high surface area and the corresponding alignment of positive and negative ions from an electrolyte disposed between them. The ideal EDLC operates as a purely physical device, without the complications of charge transfer reactions, or the expansion and contraction of active materials undergoing chemical transformations during charge and discharge. As a result of these characteristics, the EDLC holds the promise of high rate charge and discharge and long operating life.
