The probabilistic functional atlas (PFA) aggregates knowledge gathered by operating on numerous stereotactic cases and presents it in form of images representing the distribution of best stereotactic contacts [1]. The probability at a given point is then proportional to the fraction of all best contacts containing this point. The algorithm for generation of PFA is detailed in [2] and [3] addresses the calculation of PFA for the subthalamic nucleus (STN). Combination of PFA with an anatomical atlas, such as the Schaltenbrand-Wahren atlas (SWA) [9], may provide a more efficient targeting and trajectory planning. Therefore, an electronic version of SWA [4] was co-registered spatially with the PFA-STN [6]. Subsequently, an application was developed for targeting and trajectory planning by means of the combined SWA-PFA-STN [6].
