The role of hedgerows in linking woodland birds popination

The amount of hedgerow in a landscape has been round to influence the populations of some woodland birds in small woods. Counts of birds moving between woods using field boundaries and across open fields were used to identify how important hedges werefor movements by different species. Three times as many birds moved along field boundaries as flew across open fields, but larger species were more likely to fly across open fields. The total number of birds observed moving between woods increased fromearly July to September as breeding and moulting ended and dispersal increased. The size of the local population pool, estimated from wood size and the amount of woodland within 1 km, did not affect the numbers of birds recorded. The quality of hedges had the strongest effect on how they were used for movements by woodland birds.
