Bioluminescence is widely distributed in various microorganisms, insects, shrimps, squid and fish.1 The light emission is strongly correlated with energy supplementation owing to carbon source utilization. Bioluminescence can be also used as a reliable reporter for the assessment or monitoring of various aquatic samples containing toxicants such as pesticides, PCBs, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, fuels, and heavy metals.2'5 The attenuation of photo intensity due to the metabolic inhibition of toxicants, and the in vivo gene promoter assay with luciferase gene have been applied in those toxicity assays. Recently, luminescent bacteria have become one of the most important sensing devices for environmental assessments.
