The development goal of the Accord Hybrid was to maintain the driving performance of a V6 luxury sedan while providing compact class fuel economy. The base engine is a 3.0 L V6 SOHC VTEC engine that has been equipped with a Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system, and the transmission is a thin 5 speed automatic transmission that has been modified for compatibility with idle stop. The Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system is based on the system used in the Civic Hybrid, with an increase in size of the thin DC brushless motor, and use of an Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) rotor. This has provided a 26% increase in maximum torque and has enhanced the 0-60 mph acceleration performance by 0.5 seconds, compared with the V6 Accord. In order to more realize effectively use regenerative energy recovered by the IMA system during deceleration, assistance is provided to enlarge the 3 cylinder operation zone, leading to an increase in the frequency of 3 cylinder operation. Through development of these fuel economy improvement technologies, the high fuel economy for a V6 mid sized sedan of US City 29 mpg and US Highway 37 mpg has been achieved.
