Accumulation of nonstructural carbohydrate represses photosynthesis (carbohydrate repression of photosynthesis) through the following mechanisms: (1) sugar repression of photosynthetic genes, (2) decrease in the conductance for CO_2 diffusion from the intercellular spaces to the catalytic site of Rubisco (g_i) due to starch accumulation (Nafziger et al 1976), and (3) the depletion of or-thophosphate from the cytoplasm caused by sugar-phosphate accumulation.
