Heliobacteria are soil-dwelling phototrophs frequently found in rice fields. They have many intriguing characteristics, including an entirely novel pigment, bacteriochlorophyll g (Bchl g), that gives the microorganism its characteristic absorbance spectrum (Gest 1983). Similar to anoxygenie photo synthetic bacteria in the genus Chlorobium, heliobacteria have a Type I photosynthetic reaction center (RC) (Vermaas 1994), which consists of a homodimer of the protein PshA (Liebl et al 1983). It has been proposed that the PshA homodimer contains all of the RC antenna bacteriochlorophylls as well as the primary electron donor, P798, and primary electron acceptor.
