Cyanobacteria must balance energy capture with utilization to maintain efficient photosynthesis and avoid over production of reactive by-products, in part through modulation of the protein complexes involved in light-harvesting and carbon fixation. Inshallow, freshwater environments, like those of the picoplanktonic cyanobaeterium, Synechococcus elongatus, inorganic carbon (Ci) availability (Cole et al 1994), temperature, and light (Maclntyre et al 2000) can all fluctuate simultaneously and interactto influence molecular allocations to the various protein complexes involved in photosynthetic metabolism. Acclimation to such environmental fluctuations may impose conflicting regulatory priorities that can compromise sustained growth under certain conditions.
