This paper describes part of a research study on improving the tender phase in shipbuilding. One of the focus points of this research is the improvement of the communication and document exchange processes between shipyards and system-integrators. This process is too time-consuming; a major cause is the amount of unclear structures that are being used simultaneously. Therefore, a novel System Breakdown Structure (SBS) has been developed that will help to improve these processes. The SBS has been set-up based upon a functional point of view, which eases the communication between the shipyard and system-integrators. This is demonstrated by showing several parts of the SBS and explaining their functional decomposition and system boundaries. The functional perspective is applied on different levels of detail making it possible to use this structure when only functional requirements are known, thus early on in the tender phase. This motivates early involvement from the system-integrators, which ultimately will lead to better designs.
